Ying Yang and Landscape Photography
Peter's Valley Craft Center, Layton, NJ
www.petersvalley.org
This is a rare opportunity to examine the extreme opposites in Photography as often seen when comparing
Asian and Western art. Ernestine Ruben will address some of the issues of polarities such as the effects of people on the
environment, the urban and the rural orientation, and the use of composition. We will refer to Asian painting, calligraphy,
minimalist art, poetry, abstraction and look at the comparison between East and West art and the historical
and the contemporary.
Peter's Valley is ideal for such a project and the student will be encouraged to try new roads and
diversified directions.
We will visit a variety of locations close to Peter's Valley, including New York City (the Urban Landscape).
Digital photography is required.
Ernestine Ruben is internationally known through exhibitions and workshops in the US, Asia and
Europe. There are numerous monographs and articles published about her work. She is the recipient of several grants
and commissions. She experiments extensively using photography in ways to relate it to her background in art history,
painting and sculpture. Ernestine has a special interest in art education and the personal mentoring of each student.
